Motherland Alienation (2023)

Acrylic on Canvas
19' x 24'

Motherland Alienation (2023–24) is an body of works that encapsulates the profound sense of displacement she experienced upon returning to her homeland, Taipei, after a decade of living abroad. Years of continuous relocations—from Sydney to New York, London to San Francisco—shaped her adaptability, enabling her to forge new beginnings and connections in diverse and ever-changing environments.

In mid-2023, circumstances led the artist back to Taiwan, a home that had become foreign. The metro system, banking procedures, and even the streets she once traversed seemed unrecognizable. This shift from a Western context to a space that should have felt like home left her unmoored, a stranger in a once-intimate landscape.

Motherland Alienation is both a chronicle and an exploration of this tension—a rediscovery of belonging, the essence of home, and the layered complexities that lie beneath and above the surface of identity and place.
